KISS and their Hometown Homecoming at Madison Square Garden

The platform boots are sky-high, the make-up is in full-effect, and the pyrotechnics are elaborate. It’s one of the all-time great American bands, KISS, playing a sold-out show at Madison Square Garden last night. Theatrical and magnificent, it was KISS in their glory, fully embracing their catalog of hits with their signature moves. Gene Simmons and Paul  Stanley may be edging closer to 70 but you can’t tell – they perform like men no older than 40. And although this is the “End of the Road” tour, it’s clear that they’re not running out of steam anytime soon.

Simmons’ wagging tongue and Stanley’s Starchild persona captivated the crowd from “Detroit Rock City” to “Rock and Roll All Nite”. They strutted around the stage with Simmons spitting blood for maximum effect and Stanley reminiscing about the days before they were huge enough to play the Garden (KISS’s late induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2014 is also still a sore point for Stanley). The hits were played and the crowd was filled with fans of all generations. It was a wildly successful night for a band who is over 40 years into their career.

For someone who wasn’t previously a fan of KISS and had no intentions of even seeing them perform, I was pleasantly pleased and certainly wouldn’t pass up an opportunity in the future to revel in simplistic, catchy rock tunes and the theatrics that go along with it. Considering the energy and fan enthusiasm, the tour may last a couple more years yet.

It was a full-measure, over-the-top, and confetti-filled show. And I’m sure the KISS army got a little bigger last night.
